Professional Opportunities

Professional fields and job opportunities for masters graduates

Profile: Biologist and similar professions

Functions: The education acquired with the Master’s Degree Programme in Neurobiology provides masters graduates with an in-depth knowledge and the suitable resilience thanks to which they may pursue several career opportunities in: research institutions, either public - such as universities, C.N.R. (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, National Research Council), I.I.T. (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Italian Technology Institute) and so on) or private; Italian or foreign pharmaceutical, biotechnological or biomedical companies operating for the development of drugs, equipment or any other products dealing with neurosciences. The Master’s Degree Programme moreover enables graduates to disseminate biological sciences and neurosciences and qualifies them for admission to advanced training (PhD schools) and to training to become teachers in upper secondary schools.

Skills: The skills of masters graduates in Neurobiology enable them to hold leading managerial and coordinating roles in:

- research activity in the multifaceted fields of modern biology;

- analysis and control of production activities in bio-health, pharmaceutics, biotechnology and so on;

- development of new drugs;

- research activity and development of instrumentation for scientific research;

- public and private bodies providing direct healthcare services or controlling and managing environment and public health.

- scientific dissemination.

Career opportunities: Masters graduates in Neurobiology may:

- register with the Italian Register of Biologists after taking the national board examination to be qualified to practise;

- be admitted to PhD schools, both in Italy and abroad, according to the regulations provided for the admission to such courses;

- promote and develop scientific and technological innovation, as well as manage and plan neurobiological technologies;

- teach in different types of public competitions, provided that they have acquired the specific additional requisites.

- hold leading roles in Civil Service, industry or public health in the fields of biotechnologies, public health and hygiene.

Profile: Neurobiologist

Functions: The multidisciplinary education of masters graduates in Neurobiology enables them to:

- develop and manage neuroscience multidisciplinary scientific projects in basic research and in preclinical studies;

- be admitted to advanced training (2nd level professional masters, PhD schools);

-

- to understand and study complex systems with an integrated approach.

Skills: The skills of masters graduates in Neurobiology enable them to hold leading managerial and coordinating roles requiring:

- analysis and understanding of complex data;

- ability to use advanced scientific instrumentation to study neurobiology and neurosciences;

- communication skills;

- teamwork skills.

Career opportunities: Neurosciences have reached the utmost development in the latest years, if compared to the other fields of science. Such growth is expected to be reflected in new career prospects: universities, public research institutions and private companies, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, scientific dissemination, promotion and sales of technologies and materials, public health, to which masters graduates may contribute their specific skills.

A privileged opportunity for neurobiologists is the admission to advanced training, such as PhD schools and 2nd level professional masters.

On March 9, 2016, the Faculty of Sciences called a consultation meeting among stakeholders. Besides the Dean and the members of the Teaching and Scientific Monitoring Committee, as representatives of the study programmes, also the representatives of Professional Registers, among which the Italian Register of Biologists, and the representatives of some companies, among which ISPRA, Omegafarm, Digital Video and so on, took part in the above meeting. Considering the importance of communication for researchers in the presentation of their works to a specialist and non-specialist audience, also a scientific journalist took part in the above meeting. During the meeting, many useful remarks have been made, in particular on the students’ communication skills, to be discussed within the framework of the Study Programme.

This meeting was followed by a conference of the Biologist Committee of the Italian Universities (CBUI) on April 6, 2017, in which Prof. Cioni, member of the Study Programme Council, participated as representative of the Faculty.

Eventually, on December 12, 2017, the Department of Science instituted a steering committee chaired by Prof. Oliverio to encourage a continuous exchange with the stakeholders.
