At the end of the course the student should know: elements of techniques in pathology: sample taking, fixation, preparation of histological preparations and cytological and histological examinations reporting. Grading and staging of malignancies.

Course program
Organization of the Pathology Laboratory: Workflow in the Pathology Laboratory. Histopathology: Macroscopic examination of surgical specimens, biopsies, types of biopsies, management of histological material, submission and acceptance of material, processing and preparation. Cytopathology: What is cytology – advantages and disadvantages, types of cytological examinations, sample preparation and evaluation and limitations, urine analysis, respiratory cytology, cytology of fluids from serous cavities, the Pap smear. Ancillary Techniques: Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, molecular biology. Cancer screening. Intraoperative (extemporaneous) examination: Indications and contraindications for intraoperative examination, submission of material and methodology. Histopathology of neoplasms: benign and malignant neoplasms, classification of malignant neoplasms, grading of malignant neoplasms, pathological staging of malignant neoplasms. Diagnostic Findings (DFI): types of autopsies, practical and legislative aspects of DFI, the purposes of DFI, DFI timing, and cadaveric phenomena.
