Main topics: • Origins of medicine: magical-religious medicine, Egyptian and Mesopotamian medicine. • Greek medicine: Hippocrates and the rise of rational medicine. • Roman and Galenic medicine. • Medieval medicine: medical schools (Salerno, Bologna, Montpellier). • Renaissance and the birth of modern medicine: anatomy, surgery, and scientific discoveries. • Medicine between the 17th and 19th centuries: scientific revolution, rise of clinical medicine and the modern hospital. • 19th–20th century developments: microbiology, pharmacology, and public health. • The evolution of healthcare professions: the historical role of nurses, technicians, and allied health workers. • Medicine and contemporary society: bioethics, evidence-based medicine, and global health.
