The course aims to provide students with an overview of the historical evolution of medicine and health sciences, focusing on medical thought, healthcare institutions, and the development of healthcare professions within social and scientific contexts. Main topics: • Origins of medicine: magical-religious medicine, Egyptian and Mesopotamian medicine. • Greek medicine: Hippocrates and the rise of rational medicine. • Roman and Galenic medicine. • Medieval medicine: medical schools (Salerno, Bologna, Montpellier). • Renaissance and the birth of modern medicine: anatomy, surgery, and scientific discoveries. • Medicine between the 17th and 19th centuries: scientific revolution, rise of clinical medicine and the modern hospital. • 19th–20th century developments: microbiology, pharmacology, and public health. • The evolution of healthcare professions: the historical role of nurses, technicians, and allied health workers. • Medicine and contemporary society: bioethics, evidence-based medicine, and global health.
