Course program
Key topics of general pathology:
1) Definition of the areas of general pathology. Concepts of health and disease.
Pathogenesis, etiology, acute and chronic diseases.
2) Environmental pathology, general characters.
Pathology from physical agents. Radiation. Pathologies related to temperature, burns, frostbite.
Pathologies from chemical agents.
3) Cellular pathology:
Cell adaptations. Hypotrophy, atrophy, hypertrophy, hypoplasia, hyperplasia; metaplasia; dysplasia.
Cellular damage. Reversible cellular alterations: steatosis; vacuolar degeneration.
Cell death: necrosis and apoptosis.
4) Acute inflammation: definition and characteristics. Role of macrophages and fibroblasts. Chemical mediators.
Chronic inflammation. Granuloma.
Systemic manifestations of inflammation: fever.
Tissue repair: Cicatrization.
5) immunopathology:
Self and non-self recognition.
The mechanical-chemical barriers, the non-specific and specific immune response.
B and T lymphocytes, antibodies. Complement, dendritic cells and NK cells.
Immunodeficiencies and autoimmunity, transplantation and rejection mechanisms.
6) General oncology.
Essential aspects and etiology of tumors, chemical, physical and viral tumorigenesis.
Mutations. Oncogenes and tumor suppressors.
Benign and malignant tumors.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of cellular, chemical and physical biology acquired during high school courses are considered prerequisites.

Teaching mode
The course takes place with lectures in which students are required a continuous interaction by favoring questions on the topics discussed during the lesson. At the end of the course, one last lesson is dedicated to the evaluation of the comprehension of the topics covered, through a self-assessment test.
Frequency
The presence is mandatory
Exam mode
A written test (multiple choice plus a couple of open questions) will be given to the students to evaluate their level of comprehension of the course, in order to better prepare the exam that will be given as an oral exam.
The mean of the scores of each module will be calculated to give an overall evaluation of the learning.
