Introduction to the history of psychology: origins, subject matter, and main research methods of the discipline. Main theoretical models: overview of the psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive, and humanistic–existential approaches. Basic psychological functions and processes: sensation, perception, attention, learning, memory, language, thought, intelligence, motivation, emotions, will, and personality. Psychological assessment methods: collection of anamnesis and clinical interview; interpersonal communication and relationship, both verbal and non-verbal; introduction to psychodiagnostic tools for the assessment of behaviour and psychological distress. Psychology in healthcare professions: concepts of psychological health and quality of life; the relationship with the ill person, with attention to specific physical and mental conditions; empathy in situations of suffering; prevention and management of occupational stress, burnout, and mobbing.
