Course program
Organization of a biomedical and molecular biology laboratory.
Laboratory analysis: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases; concept of variability; quality controls; reference ranges; predictive value.
Concept of Diagnostic Biomarker; examples of cardiac, stroke, and nutritional biomarkers and their detection. Analysis of renal disease biomarkers through chemical and morphological urine analysis (UCM).
Basic and advanced techniques in laboratory medicine:
• Flow cytometry
• Impedance
• Serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation
• UV-Visible spectroscopy
• Radioimmunoassay, RIA
• Immunofluorescence
• Chromatography
• Mass spectrometry
• ELISA test
Laboratory safety.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of biochemistry, cell biology, structure and property of nucleic acids and proteins.

Exam mode
The learning verification will be through a written and/or oral test on topics covered in class. Knowledge of each module shall contribute to the overall assessment. To pass the exam it is necessary to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30 in each module.
