Course program
Medicine 1: Empathy, Active Listening, Effective Communication with the Patient. Signs and Symptoms. Medical History and Physical Examination. From Symptom/Sign to Disease in Nursing Triage: Pain, Headache, Dyspnea, Cough. Cyanosis, Acrocyanosis, Raynaud’s Phenomenon, Capillaroscopy. Prevention of Hospital-Acquired Infections and the Role of Hands in Infection Transmission.
Medicine 2: Active participation of students in the review of Lesson 1.
General clinical approach to diseases: from symptom/sign to disease in nursing triage — peripheral facial paralysis versus stroke, palpitations, syncope/presyncope, hematuria, pruritus, jaundice. Edema, lymphedema, lipedema. Elastic compression bandaging. Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI).
Medicine 3: Active participation of students in the review of Lesson 2.
From symptom/sign to disease in nursing triage — deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, post-thrombotic syndrome, venous ulcer.
Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Interdisciplinary management model for chronic disease care. CRIIS as a PDTA model for the interdisciplinary management and continuity of care in rare chronic diseases. Hospital–community integration.
Geriatrics 1: Demographic aging, chronological versus biological age, cardiovascular and oncological risk, main symptoms and signs related to aging diseases, community-based chronic care networks. The elderly and hypomobility: pressure ulcers — prevention and treatment strategies, chronic venous insufficiency and post-thrombotic syndrome, edema and elastic compression.
Geriatrics 2: Cardiovascular diseases — atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, acute/chronic ischemia, blue toe syndrome in nursing triage. The frailty of the elderly patient: multimorbidity, reduced drug metabolism, vascular fragility, skin atrophy. Definition of geriatric syndromes.
Geriatrics 3: Geriatric syndromes — sarcopenia, osteoporosis and fractures, falls. Telemedicine in geriatric patients. The concept of humanization of care.
Practical Training: 1-week rotation at the Medical Day Hospital — Vascular Medicine and Autoimmunity Unit (UOSD):
• Observing the performance of videocapillaroscopy
• Observing the performance of a teleconsultation
• Technique for measuring the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) using continuous-wave (CW) Doppler
• Technique for performing elastic compression bandaging of the lower limbs
