The constructivist and positivist paradigms. • Data and activities in qualitative research: differences and similarities with the stages of quantitative research. • Critical analysis of qualitative research. • The research problem, purpose, and research question. • Main theoretical approaches: descriptive and interpretive phenomenology, ethnographic research, grounded theory, historical research. • Other approaches: case studies, narrative analyses, qualitative-descriptive studies, critical theory, feminist research. • Sampling in qualitative research: characteristics within major theoretical designs. • Data collection methods. • Data analysis: coding methods and differences across major methodologies. • Trustworthiness and rigour according to Lincoln and Guba. • Nursing and psychometric variables: overview of quantitative methodology. Scales and instruments: validity and reliability. • Mixed-method approaches: types and distinctive features.
