Course program
The module “Health Sciences and Tobacco Management” aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge, critical analysis skills, and practical tools to understand and effectively address the complexity of tobacco dependence.
Students will begin by acquiring the fundamental concepts related to the issue of tobacco use and the reasons why training in this field is necessary. The international and national regulatory framework will be presented (Framework Convention on Tobacco Control – FCTC, the Italian framework law, and the Sirchia law), along with the principles of the Tobacco Endgame.
Particular attention will be devoted to epidemiological data, traditional and new tobacco products, the mechanisms of nicotine dependence, and the toxic effects of carbon monoxide, carcinogenic substances, and radioactivity. The health risks associated with fine particulate matter (PM) and the benefits of smoking cessation will also be examined. Students will learn to critically interpret epidemiological data and explain the impact of smoking on individual and public health and on social and environmental costs.
The course will guide students in interpreting behavioral change models, especially Prochaska and Di Clemente’s stages of change, and in understanding the dynamics of withdrawal. Practical application of the 5A and 5C approaches will be explored as operational tools in managing smokers.
At the same time, students will develop practical skills in the use of Brief Motivational Counseling and effective communication strategies, both verbal and non-verbal, as fundamental instruments to support adherence to cessation programs.
The course will also provide training in the correct use of evidence based pharmacological treatments, with particular attention to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), focusing on their effectiveness, limitations, and contexts of application, integrating practical schemes and simulations.
Finally, students will be encouraged to critically evaluate prevention and treatment strategies and to design integrated intervention pathways that combine communication, motivational, and pharmacological approaches, with the ultimate goal of contributing actively to public health policies aimed at overcoming tobacco use, and to the promotion of smoke-free environments.
