Course objectives

At the end of the course students will have to provide more deepened knowledge regarding the clinical disciplines, and the operative techniques, functional to the practice of the dental hygienist profession in order to s to acquire more skills in their field of study. The students will have to know the demographic aspects, the prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases, in the developmental, adult and geriatric age, even in the medically compromised patient or psycho-physical disabled, with specific deepening for the pathologies / preventive procedures and therapeutics pertaining to the dental hygienist's clinical activity. At the end of the course the students must be able to use the acquired knowledge in order to practice the complete range of the operative procedures of the professional profile, on the dentist's indication and in the context of the global treatment of the patient without producing additional risks for him.

For the exam, we suggest a theoretical deepening already from the beginning of the course attendance. For consultation and study, the recommended books are: LIMEBACK H. integrated preventive dentistry. Ed EMSI Lecture notes and scientific articles
Teaching mode
The teacher provides lectures with traditional methods with audiovisual aids and scheduling of lessons as on the website of the Dental Hygiene School.
Frequency
As reported in the art. 4 of the Regulation of the first level courses of the health professions for the institutional offices The seminar is an educational activity carried out by one or more teachers, including different subject areas; it can be realized with lessons, interactive courses, seminars that deepen curricular topics or deal with extra-curricular topics aimed at acquiring professional skills. Participation in conferences organized in collaboration with institutions outside the University can be recognized by the Bureau, with the allocation of a number of CFU proportional to the duration and content of the event. The credits acquired with the seminar activity are duly certified by the teacher responsible for the seminar activity which also provides for the cumulative verbalization. The seminar activity is an integral part of the educational curriculum, attendance is mandatory and can not be less than 75%.
Exam mode
The evaluation consists of a suitability to be obtained following an oral test and the evaluation of the attendance, active participation, reasoning skills and autonomous study.
Lesson mode
The teacher provides lectures with traditional methods with audiovisual aids and scheduling of lessons as on the website of the Dental Hygiene School.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
General concepts and background (4 hours): Introduction to dental histology and presentation of the programme. The tooth: macroscopic anatomy. The tooth: development and growth. Dental tissues: microscopic anatomy of enamel, dentin and cementum. Specific insight (6 hours): Preparation of thin sections of the tooth. Advanced methods of studying dental tissues: conventional microtomography, synchrotron light microtomography and analysis of trace elements in dental tissues by Laser Ablation.
Prerequisites
In order to understand the course content and achieve the learning objectives, it is useful for students to have a) a basic knowledge of embryology, b) a good knowledge of English at the start of the course.

Frequency
Following paragraph 4.5 of the Regulations of the Dental School, the student is required to attend educational activities, formal, non-formal, vocational. The frequency is checked by the teachers through signature / updated lists provided by the Academic Office, as established by CCLMOPD. The certificate of mandatory attendance to the teaching course is required to the student to be admitted at the final test.
Exam mode
The examination is oral. A pass mark of at least 18/30 is required. The student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in class and has read and critically assimilated the literature distributed during the course. In order to obtain a mark of 30/30 cum laude, the student must instead demonstrate that he/she has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, that he/she is able to relate them in a logical and coherent manner, and that he/she is able to discuss the literature distributed during the course in a critical and reasoned manner, relating it appropriately to the topics covered. Attendance and active participation in lectures will be taken into account in the assessment.
Lesson mode
The lecturer provides face-to-face teaching using traditional methods, with audio-visual aids and with a timetable as registered in the GOMP Classroom/Order System and published on the CdS website. Teaching methods: 1) Theoretical lectures 2) In-depth seminars 3) Dental histology laboratory practice.
