STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS

Course objectives

STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS The course aims to develop a critical knowledge for the formulation of opinion concerning the status and state of conservation of an existing building structure and, subsequently, for the identification of any appropriate interventions of structural reinforcement, calibrated in accordance with the limitations of all the constituents "boundary conditions" of the problem.

Course program
Together with an introduction to the discipline of historical building reinforcement and to reference standard, to the course will propose the study of constructive aspects of the monuments, of their static behavior and of their degradation and instability. Particular attention is paid to the 'knowledge path' of historical architecture and to an overview of structural restoration criteria and techniques. An exercise is planned aimed at the structural reading of a historic building, the diagnostic project and the proposal of reinforcement interventions. The frontal lessons will tackle with: 1. A brief introduction to historical building reinforcement (6 hours): • basic aspects about conservation and structural reinforcement; 2. The legislative environment (7 hours): • istructions of protection for historic buildings • guide lines for historic architecture • technical standards for masonry constructions 3. The structural behavior of masonry elements (18 hours): • mechanical behavior and construction of the masonry: - masonry, brick and raw earth constructions; - assembly and compactness; masonry skeleton and load flows; - structural behavior on an empirical basis • walls and masonry ‘male’: - static behavior under vertical and horizontal loads; - structural damages; - structural checks, • pillars and columnes: - static behavior; - structural damages; - instability problems; - structural checks; • arches and platbands - constructive aspects; - static behavior; - collapse mechanisms; - graphical methods of structural verification • vaults and domes - constructive aspects; - static behavior; - structural damage 4. wood structural elements (8 hours): • general characteristics of the wood material; • notes on damages of wood elements • wooden slabs - constructive aspects; - damages; - structural checks • woodden trusses - constructive aspects; - damages; - structural checks 5. metallic structural elements (8 ore): • tie rods • iron beams and architraves • the ‘transition’ slabs - constructive aspects; - damages; • metallic trusses • steel and cast iron pillars 6. The 'knowledge path in the structural restauration (10 hours): • tools for the knowlodge of transformation phases. • structural lecture; • structural diagnostics: experimental investigations and monitoring 7. reinforcement interventions (18 hours): • of foundations; • of vertical structures; • of wooden slabs and trusses; • of arches and vaults • the seismic problem and interventions
Prerequisites
It is necessary to know the methods and the tools of architectural conservation. It is necessary to know the constructive aspects of historical architecture.

Frequency
The frequency is optional. However, students are encouraged to attend both the 'ex cathedra' lessons and the exercises schedule.
Exam mode
The final exam is a discussion of the graphic works produced and an oral test about the topics dealt with in the lessons and contained in the basic bibliography. It is possible to take the exam through a unique final interview or to split it into separate parts developed during the course and at the end of it.
