Department of History, Drawing and Restoration of Architecture
Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Sciences (Class L-17)
Description of the study program
Specific learning objectives
The Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Sciences represents the first stage of the “3+2” study path in Architecture offered by Sapienza University’s Faculty of Architecture. Its aim is to provide students with the essential knowledge and skills in the field of design disciplines. These are fundamental both for accessing master’s degree programs focused on the professional training of architects and for entering the job market in accordance with Italian legislation.
Balancing theoretical and practical aspects, the program guides students through an integrated learning process that develops critical thinking and the ability to connect technical-scientific and historical-humanistic knowledge. Graduates will be able to work independently or within multidisciplinary teams in designing new buildings and urban areas, as well as in the conservation, transformation, and enhancement of the built environment and landscape.
Throughout the three years, students address all major areas of architecture: architectural, interior, and landscape design; history of architecture; architectural and urban restoration; urban planning and land management; representation and spatial data processing; mathematics, structures, technology, and environmental sciences; real estate appraisal and professional practice. Courses are delivered through lectures, design studios, seminars, workshops, and internships, enabling students to acquire both theoretical knowledge and operational skills. The program also explores the physical, environmental, economic, and social impacts of design, along with feasibility, cost estimation, and building production processes.
The curriculum includes an English language course focused on technical terminology, supported by language experts to strengthen international communication skills. The design experience develops progressively through three architectural design studios, guiding students from foundational knowledge of architectural composition to more advanced design complexity.
Entry requirements
Admission to the program is subject to a national entry test with a limited number of places (as per Italian Law 264/99), held simultaneously in major Italian universities. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or an equivalent foreign qualification.
Candidates are expected to have good oral and written communication skills in Italian, logical and abstract reasoning abilities, basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, history, geography, and general culture, as well as elementary skills in graphic representation and the interpretation of drawings and diagrams.
If the required entry knowledge is not demonstrated in the admission test, students are assigned Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) in Mathematics, to be fulfilled within the first year by passing the Foundations of Mathematics exam or a specific remedial test. To support students, the program provides dedicated learning materials.
General structure of the program
The three-year curriculum offers progressive levels of knowledge acquisition, experimentation, and application of design methods, structured across the disciplinary areas required by the Italian category of degrees Class L-17. Courses are balanced among design, technical-scientific, and historical-humanistic subjects, ensuring an interdisciplinary approach to architecture, landscape, urban planning, and restoration.
The study plan includes:
- single-subject courses providing basic technical-scientific and cultural training;
- architectural design studios, the core of the program, integrating different disciplines;
- seminars, workshops, and internships to apply knowledge in practical contexts;
- elective courses to personalize the curriculum;
- an English language proficiency test, focused on technical-scientific terminology.
Career opportunities and access to master’s degrees
Graduates in Architectural Sciences can:
- work as Junior Architects (after passing the state licensing exam and registering with the professional board);
- work as technical collaborators in architectural and engineering firms, construction companies, public administrations, and local authorities;
- operate in the rehabilitation and recovery of buildings and urban areas, in land management agencies, superintendencies, and institutions for the protection of cultural and landscape heritage.
The program is designed as the first stage of the European “3+2” structure and provides ideal preparation for admission to LM-4 Master’s Degrees in Architecture, completing the five-year training pathway required by EU directives for the professional qualification of architects.
