CONSERVATION DESIGN STUDIO
Course objectives
The course aims to teach basic knowledge of the history and theory of architectural conservation, and to provide skills in analytical survey, historical investigation, reading and diagnosis of degradation and conservation works; inform the students about regulations and cataloguing; practice in the design of a restoration project. The aim of restoration is not only to conserve the integrity of the risources, but also to reveal it's cultural values and to improve the leggibility of it's design. Restoration is high specialitation operation based on a critical-historical process of evaluation, and must not be based on conjecture.

Course program
The course includes lectures divided into the following thematic sections:
. Construction techniques and materials used in pre-industrial buildings.
. The methodology of investigation of the architectural work (archival-documentary, iconographic and bibliographic research, analysis of structures, metrological and proportional analyzes and comparisons with other works), aimed at the knowledge of the architectural work and its historical- artistic evaluation, aimed at the recognition of value (constructive and expressive aspects).
. The analysis of the degradation of materials and structures.
. The project of the conservation intervention.
In parallel with the lectures, the student will design, with the support of the professor, the conservation intervention of a building proposed by the course.
Prerequisites
Adequate knowledge of the basic concepts of ancient and medieval history of architecture and of manual and instrumental survey techniques.
Appropriate critical equipment to understand the architecture.
Books
No text adopted. Texts developed by the teacher will be available through the e-learning platform.
Teaching mode
The lessons will take place in person. Some lessons are planned in historic buildings within the urban center of Rome.
Frequency
Attendance at the course is mandatory for passing the exam.
Exam mode
The oral exam is aimed at evaluating the knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the conservation of architecture and the topics of the lectures.
The conservation project will be evaluated in the analytical and design aspects to define the degree of awareness achieved by the student.
