PLANT DIVERSITY- FLORA AND VEGETATION SUPPORT FOR URBAN REGENERATION
Course objectives
General objectives The Course provides the theoretical-methodological and operational tools necessary for the identification of the main plant formations and communities occurring in urban and peri-urban areas. These tools will be used in various fields of applications such in particular that of environmental recovery and restoration processes these latter being at the base of a sustainable land management strategy. The methodological approach of the course will provide all those tools aimed at the sampling of vegetation in the field both in terms of linear transects and minimum areas plot-sizes. These tools are aimed at highlighting specific vegetation communities and at classifying them on the basis of the most recent syntaxonomic schemes and / or placing them in the legend of thematic maps such as vegetation maps, habitats maps or land-use mape. At the same time these vegetation communities will be compared with those listed in the main biodiversity conservation directives (see for example the Habitats Directive). Specific objectives Knowledge and ability in understanding At the end of the course the student will be asked to demonstrate the acquired knowledge and understanding skills, as well as skills that allow him to support, from a theoretical-methodological point of view, the setting up of territorial planning strategies consistent with the identity and the floristic-vegetational features of the places majorly based on the neutral model of the potential natural vegetation. The verification of knowledge will be carried out through intermediate examination tests both at a theoretical level and at a practical level. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student must demonstrate mastery in the use of analytical keys for the determination of plant species and in the interpretation of thematic mapping of a floristic or vegetational type. It should also be able to propose pools of specific species and or plant groups aimed at designing or planning strategies related to Green Infrastuctures or the implementation of ecosystem services provided by existing vegetation or possible strategies aimed to increase the efficiency of ecological networks. These skills will be verified both in the theoretical and experimental activities. The verification of the knowledge will be carried out, moreover, through the exam test proper and through tests in itinere. Autonomy of judgment. At the end of the course the student must demonstrate the ability in acquiring knowledge and experience, to evaluate and rework them for the purpose of forming an independent and original judgment. In particular, the student must demonstrate skills in autonomous management and in the conscious planning of complex topics in the field of spatial planning related to the use of plant species. The verification of the knowledge will be carried out, moreover, through the exam test proper and through tests in itinere. Communication skills. At the end of the course the student will be asked to demonstrate, after the acquisition and the operational capacity with respect to the theoretical methodological, technical and design knowledge, proper to the teaching, to be able to communicate them correctly and using a consistent scientific terminology. with the issues addressed. It should also be able to use advanced and multimedia spatial planning tools in the field of mapping, in the qualitative and quantitative assessments of naturalness and landscape quality. The verification of the knowledge will be carried out, moreover, through the exam test proper and through tests in itinere. Learning ability At the end of the course the student will be asked to demonstrate a high capacity for autonomous learning, which will allow him to update and continuously increase its knowledge and skills in plant ecology field, and, more generally, the issues related to recovery strategies using the native flora, Restoration and environmental re-qualification. The verification of the knowledge will be carried out, moreover, through the exam test proper and through tests in itinere.
