ENERGY, RAW MATERIALS AND INNOVATION
Course objectives
LEARNING TARGETS The course, in its general part, intends to provide the basic knowledge on traditional commodity and on the operation of the main international markets related to them. Some specific parts allow deepening the knowledge on the sectors connected to raw materials with particular reference to the production of energy and to the relevant industrial production. Further knowledge is provided in the field of relations that occur between the use of raw materials/production/protection of environment according to the paradigm of sustainable development with a particular reference to the ‘sustainable production & consumption’ aspects. A final check of the level of learning acquired is foreseen. Students acquire the basic knowledge, with a critical sense, on the specific issues and on the advanced solutions in the context of the main commodities markets, of their rational use (dematerialization) and of energy technologies The learning targets may also be declined on the basis of the five descriptors of Dublin, according to the following scheme: A. Knowledge and understanding Acquisition of basic and characterizing skills on the operation of the main markets of the commodity; ability to identify objectives and selection criteria in the field of energy source, both traditional and renewable also in the light of the policies and legislation both at community and national level; acquisition of basic knowledge on the new economic models/paradigms (sharing, blue, green and circular economy) for the protection of natural resources and sustainable development. Development of the learning ability to acquire new skills by means of further targeted study paths and/or by professional experience in the field. B. Applying knowledge and understanding Application of acquired knowledge to understand how, at the basic level and in simulated situations, portfolios of purchase of raw materials can be generated. Application of the other acquired knowledge to the analysis of the management of the scarcity of natural resources, to study potential energy scenarios and to the promotion of new models of sustainable development. C. Making judgements A capacity for critical evaluation of the problems related to the shortage and to the supply of industrial raw materials (including energy) is required. Ability to assess the most suitable solutions for their environmental and sustainable management, with particular reference to both EU and National policies and new models of economic development (green growth), is also required. D. Communication skills It is required to have a good capacity of expression of the acquired knowledge, verified through either targeted tests of assessment or - when possible – by active participation in the classroom, always using an appropriate technical language. E. Learning skills Ability to learn and tackling the issues introduced by the course with an appropriate language. Ability to provide an update of the knowledge acquired in the specific sector, even with the use of the modern ICT
