Degree programme choice orientation

The SOrT (Servizio di Orientamento integrato) is the guidance and orientation service provided by Sapienza University. It has a central office located at the main University campus (Città Universitaria) and several help desks throughout the faculties. At the SOrT desks, students can receive faculty-specific information about degree programmes, as well as support in making informed academic choices. The central office, together with some faculty members, coordinates incoming orientation and tutoring initiatives, and provide information about academic offerings and administrative procedures related to course enrolment.

Orientation initiatives and projects:

1. “Porte aperte alla Sapienza” – Open Days
Held annually at the main University campus (Città Universitaria), this is Sapienza’s flagship event dedicated primarily to prospective first-year students. Over the course of three days, participants have the opportunity to meet faculty members and current students, gather detailed information, and attend presentations in the Aula Magna introducing the academic programmes offered by all Faculties. The event is open to anyone interested in enrolling in Sapienza’s Bachelor's, Single-Cycle Master's, or Master's Degree programmes, with a special focus on final-year secondary school students. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to discover Sapienza — its academic offerings, learning environments, cultural and social spaces, and the wide range of student services available, including libraries and study areas, museums, student housing, sports facilities, and the University theatre. Alongside academic guidance, students can also receive information on administrative procedures, both in person at faculty booths across the campus and online through virtual stands, including enrolment processes, application deadlines, and requirements for admission tests.
To foster an inclusive environment and facilitate access to higher education, the Office for Students with Disabilities and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) offers dedicated support and advisory services. The office assists students in developing personalised study plans and provides academic, financial, or logistical support tailored to the needs of students in vulnerable conditions. It also guides students through the application process for such accommodations, including details on the required clinical documentation.

2. Sapienza Orientation Portal
To support prospective students in choosing their degree programme, Sapienza has developed a dedicated online portal (https://orientamento.uniroma1.it/index.html).
This digital space offers an immersive preview of university life, featuring virtual tours of the campus, classrooms, laboratories, libraries, the University theatre, music venues, and sports facilities. It also includes online educational modules covering key course topics, along with tools to help students assess and strengthen their preparation for admission and placement tests.
Additionally, the portal serves as a central hub for information about orientation events organised by faculties and departments throughout the year. It also hosts video presentations introducing faculties and degree programmes, especially newly established ones. All orientation initiatives are promoted through Sapienza’s social media channels to better reach and engage interested students.

3. Self-Assessment Tools (developed by Sapienza experts and scientifically validated)

  1. “Conosci te stesso” (Know Yourself): a tool designed to support students in making informed decisions about their academic path. Upon completing the questionnaire, users receive a detailed profile that includes their personality traits, academic inclinations, and potential career directions.
  2. “Io, me e gli altri” (Me, Myself and Others): an assessment focused on evaluating soft skills, namely personal and interpersonal abilities essential for social interaction and successful integration into the job market.

4. Orientation Events
A comprehensive list of upcoming orientation events, displayed in chronological order and organized by the University, faculties, departments, and degree programme councils, is available at: https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/347362
Sapienza provides active support to students with disabilities and Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) throughout the crucial stages of orientation, evaluation, and admission. The Office for Students with Disabilities and SLDs evaluates and implements personalised testing accommodations based on the certified needs of each student.
For degree programmes with locally or nationally regulated limited enrolment and selective admission tests, students with disabilities can request specific accommodations (such as dedicated rooms, extended time, reader tutors, assistant tutors, Italian Sign Language-LIS interpreters, or use of calculators) by following the procedures outlined in the respective admission notices.
Finally, the office offers ongoing support for vulnerable students enrolling at Sapienza, assisted by specialised tutors, peer tutors, and LIS interpreters.

The Faculty of Economics actively participates in Sapienza’s university-wide initiative “Porte Aperte in Sapienza” (Open Days) and organizes its own orientation activities, including “Open Day Economia” and “Guided Tours of the Faculty of Economics,” along with meetings specifically designed to present the educational offer of Master’s Degree Programmes.
The guidance services and activities specifically organized by the degree programme are designed to provide prospective students with the tools and information they need to make informed and well-considered choices regarding their university studies. The Degree Programme Council implements both individual and group initiatives and takes part in university-wide events to support students throughout all phases of orientation: before enrolment (incoming), during their studies (ongoing), and after graduation (outgoing).
To support students in choosing a course of study that aligns with their interests and aptitudes, the degree programme periodically organizes group meetings. These meetings offer moments of dialogue with faculty members and include contributions from alumni, PhD students, and external stakeholders to highlight the connection between academic training, scientific research, and the job market.
Below is a list of the orientation activities led by the teaching staff of the programme throughout the academic year:

Welcome Day for Finass First-Year Students:
The Degree Programme Board of the Master’s Degree Programme in Finance and Insurance (Finass) welcomes all newly enrolled students from all curricula with an institutional meeting held between late October and early November. This event introduces students to the programme’s academic structure and illustrates how the skills and knowledge acquired align with the professional and socio-economic demands of the field. The meeting includes presentations by professionals from the financial and insurance industries, who outline the main career opportunities available to graduates. The event also features testimonials from alumni who have successfully launched careers in prominent institutions, organizations, and companies operating in the finance and insurance sectors. It serves as a first moment of engagement between faculty and students, providing an overview of the programme’s structure and learning objectives, potential career paths, job market opportunities, internationalization initiatives, and key administrative procedures to make the most of the academic experience.
Finass Orientation Days:
The Master’s Degree in Finance and Insurance (Finass) hosts an annual orientation event aimed at third-year students enrolled in Bachelor’s Degree programmes at the Faculty of Economics, as well as students from other faculties and universities. The event takes place between mid-May and mid-June, coinciding with the end of classes and the beginning of the summer exam session, to encourage maximum participation. The event features contributions from faculty members, professionals in finance, insurance, and actuarial sectors, as well as alumni of the Finass programme. These former students, now working in insurance companies, financial institutions, national and international brokerage firms, energy market companies, banks, and regulatory authorities, share their professional experiences. Through their stories, speakers demonstrate how the Finass programme provides students with specialized skills and tools that are well-aligned with the professional profiles currently in demand in the job market.
Finass Curriculum Selection Orientation Days:
The degree programme organizes targeted orientation meetings for first-year students to support them in selecting the curriculum that best matches their personal interests and career aspirations. These sessions aim to help students identify the most suitable academic path based on their aptitudes, taking into account the professional roles associated with each curriculum, as well as opportunities in research and access to doctoral programmes.
These meetings are held in December of the first year of study.

Finally, the Sapienza Orientation Platform offers an immersive experience of university life through videos and images of university facilities, including a dedicated video presentation of the programme: https://youtu.be/NBIpmt9pST4.
