Course program
Aim The internship aims to provide future physicians with an integrated and practical understanding of pediatric surgery through direct observation and involvement in clinical and surgical activities. Particular emphasis will be placed on diagnostic assessment, therapeutic decision-making, and the multidisciplinary management of pediatric surgical patients. Students will be paired with medical tutors during clinical and surgical activities and will participate in the discussion of real clinical cases. Specific Objectives Deepen knowledge of the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways of the main pediatric surgical conditions Understand the principles of pre-, intra-, and post-operative clinical management Develop the ability to recognize pediatric surgical emergencies and contribute to their diagnostic assessment Directly observe surgical activities and become familiar with the pediatric operating room environment Internship Content 1. Pediatric Urology Diagnosis and treatment of common urological conditions (e.g., phimosis, inguinal hernia, undescended testicle) Surgical indications and operative techniques Postoperative follow-up and management of complications 2. Neonatal Congenital Malformations Early diagnostic evaluation and multidisciplinary approach Conditions covered: esophageal atresia, gastroschisis, omphalocele, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, anorectal malformations Principles of surgical newborn stabilization Timing of surgery and care pathway 3. Pediatric Surgical Emergencies Recognition of major surgical emergencies (appendicitis, intestinal intussusception, acute scrotum, intestinal obstructions) Differential diagnosis and surgical planning 4. Observership in the Operating Room Observation of major pediatric surgical procedures Understanding of the organization and workflow of the operating room Learning protocols of sterility and surgical safety
Prerequisites
A solid understanding of Human Anatomy (mandatory requirement) A solid understanding of Pathophysiology (mandatory requirement) Basic knowledge of Pediatrics (recommended)
Frequency
Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class. The attendance requirement will be considered fulfilled if at least 75% of the scheduled class hours are attended.
Exam mode
The evaluation will be based on the understanding and practical application of the main topics covered during the activities carried out in the ward and operating room.
Lesson mode
Ward activities, outpatient clinic, and observership in the operating room.

Course program
There is no predetermined program. The pathologies and diagnostic-therapeutic processes of the patients observed by the student during the internship will be explored in depth.
Prerequisites
Having passed the exams required by their study program that are prerequisites for this activity. Having completed previous clinical internships to be able to conduct oneself appropriately in the various hospital settings they will need to attend.
Books
No suggested texts are provided. Students will refer to the texts used during general surgery exams. Current scientific literature articles on the pathologies they will observe during their internship will be provided to the student.
Frequency
Attendance will be agreed upon with the instructor on a weekly basis.
Exam mode
The candidate's initial abilities, final competencies, and overall improvement during the internship will be evaluated.
Lesson mode
The student will need to shadow the clinical activities of the instructor. Timings and arrangements will be decided on a case-by-case basis according to clinical needs.

Frequency
Attendance of more than 80% of the lesson hours required by the pediatric surgery module is mandatory to pass the oral exam.

The verification of the student's actual achievement of the expected results will be conducted through the oral exam of the integrated coursein pediatrics. For the purposes of evaluation, the student's attendance at the pediatric surgery module lesson cycle will be taken into account.
Lesson mode
The pediatric surgery lectures will be included in the calendar foreseen by the integrated pediatrics course.

Cultural: Knowledge of the ethical and deontological principles of medicine, particularly regarding the management of high-risk pregnancies and communication with patients. Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, addressing complex issues collaboratively and respecting cultural and social differences. Curricular: Basic knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology, with particular focus on the systems and organs involved in pregnancy (e.g., cardiovascular, endocrine, renal systems). Fundamentals of medical sciences, such as microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology, to address infectious and metabolic complications during pregnancy. Competence in diagnostic imaging techniques (ultrasound, Doppler, advanced imaging) and fetal monitoring.
