Course objectives

At the end of the course the student must: - know the fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms of the immune response and their role in the defense against infectious agents and immunopathogenic reactions

Course program
General properties of the immune system: natural and adaptive immunity; molecular basis of antigenicity. Organs and cells of the immune system, ontogenesis of the immune system, leukocyte migration. The major histocompatibility complex and antigen presentation. The antigen receptors of lymphocytes and the generation of receptor diversity. T lymphocytes: differentiation, activation and functions. B lymphocytes: differentiation, activation and functions. Antibodies: structure, functions, receptors and the antigen-antibody reaction. The complement. The cytokines. Induction and regulation of the immune response. Immune responses against bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases. The vaccine. The immune response against tumors. The congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies. Mechanisms of induction, maintenance and breakdown of tolerance; autoimmune diseases. The hypersensitivities. The immunology of transplantation. Main immunological techniques.
Prerequisites
Students must possess basic knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, molecular and cellular biology

Teaching mode
The course is based on traditional lessons (four hours each) with the teacher teaching the whole class
Frequency
The attendance is mandatory, and it is verified during the lessons. It is possible to sustain the final test only with an attendance of 50%
Exam mode
The final exam is composed of a test (30 queries, one correct answer each query) followed by an oral exam on the whole program To Pass the test student must obtain a note of 18/30. Student must possess a sufficient knowledge of the program To obtain a note of 30/30 with distinction student must possess an excellent knowledge of the whole program using a correct terminology to expose the topics
