Course program
The starting kit 1. Anatomy of a scientific paper. The students will learn how to navigate across the different scientific journals and articles, focusing on research papers having a medical-clinical topic. After an orientation on the knowledge of bibliographic research methods database (e.g. Medline) and metrics (citations, impact factor), frontal lessons will be focused on understanding the structure of a manuscript (e.g. IMRAD), emphasis will be given to the interpretation of figures and results, including graphical abstract, charts and plots describing results and statistics. Lessons aim to deepen analyze scientific texts and develop the ability of critical reading of a scientific paper. 2. Graphical Abstract. In this team work activity, students will first read, interpret and discuss a scientific paper, and then they will test their skills in elaborating scientific knowledge by creating a graphical abstract. This section will be concluded by a graphical abstract contest, where the students will vote for the best work. 3. Scientific communication at conferences. Students will be trained on how to deliver a talk to the scientific audience. Groups of 4-5 students will choose an article that will be presented in the form of a 15-minutes talk. Students will learn how to communicate effectively in a short time frame to their peers. Discussion will be chaired by the students.
