Course program
The course aims to give students a greater capacity in architectural design. It is for them an upgrade regarding what learned earlier; specially focused on autonomy and design maturity needed to start with full awareness the profession of engineer-architect. The given theme for the project will address a complex issue both for the space anf the typological and functional articulation of the program, that will have also urban implications for its relationship with the town. The highest level of depth and detail will be achieved in each proposed solution. The project will offer a proposal at the urban scale, reconnecting fragments todaday saparated and without any identity of the city, and a at the building scale, testing space, volume, distribution and linguistic expressions on the scene of the more challenging and compelling contemporary architectural trends. Each project will be verified through the examination of its details ans structural solutions. The lessons will discuss the main topics related to design, from the stage setting, the birth of the architectural concept, the idea of being compatible with the basic needs of the client and the constraints imposed by the existing legislation. The course will cover the different compositional techniques, the different approaches to the scale of detail. And it will analyze and decompose outstanding projects. THEME DESIGN: 1 URBAN REGENERATION a first topic is the study of a roman problematic area, where constructions of different character, texture, value, or solidity had continuosly overlapped each other along the centuries and decades Residences, barns, garages and shacks stack in a urban place losing its quality. The architectural project don’t limit itself to the single building solution, it can give a new identity and a new meaning to these areas transforming their image, perception, use, and eventually start a regeneration of the urban context. - Via Tiburtina/Scalo San Lorenzo area, Rome - Via Cupa area, Rome - Pigneto areas, Rome 2 LIVING SYSTEMS EXPERIMENTAL another topic linked with the project research concerns a central theme in many countries policies for decades to come. The theme of housing and unconfortable living, so far dealt with a merely welfare approach. The architectural project can give a new meaning to the daily life of those who are facing particular problems or different ways of life, identifying the living systems that can be adapted to deal with emergency situations of hardship or to manage differently the idea of residential settlements composed of private accommodation complemented by space and common services _Emergency _Development planned _Co-housing _Slum upgradig/Strategies for living in favelas 3 RE-BUILD / RE-USE THE EXISTING In this case, the project research topic focuses on building structures seemingly lifeless. The meaning of the project is to grasp the essential features of a spatial quality that can survive only through the action of architectural design. In conclusion learn from the existing, or by all those space assets in which the functional transformation or the only productive reconversion can kick-start regeneration processes of the built space _Shelters _Abandoned buildings and housing designs _Abandoned buildings and other different new features _Abandoned buildings and public space 4 URBAN AREAS UNRESOLVED These are situations in which the research projects will address various "urban" implications, which will seek to establish meaningful relationships and form with the city. Becoming an attractive element, essential, lto manage with caution because of its importance, decisive catalyst for a new context that will also set up a renewed urban space through the creation of public spaces.
