Solid Mechanics
Course objectives
Based on the knowledge acquired in the courses of Geometry, Calculus, and Physics, this course introduces to the mechanics of deformable solids. In particular, after defining the concepts of strain, stress and the equilibrium equations for a general elastic problem, we solve the Saint-Venant problem for a prismatic beam-like body. This solution allows to estimate the stress distribution in the beam cross-section and to estimate its stiffness. Both these results are of fundamental importance in developing the beam theory studied in the course Scienza delle Costruzioni II.
