Study, research and traineeship opportunities abroad
Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research and traineeships abroad, both in Europe and outside Europe, for short or long periods, including thesis work abroad and many other options.
Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ Programme promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It finances mobility for study purposes in all disciplines and at all academic levels, including doctoral studies, and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
Erasmus+ allows students to attend courses and sit exams abroad with full recognition in their academic curriculum, or to carry out research for their Bachelor's, Master’s or doctoral thesis.

Traineeships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to undertake traineeships in companies or training and research centres located in participating countries. The Programme enables full-time traineeship activities abroad, recognised as an integral part of the student’s academic programme. Traineeships may also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection procedure takes place before obtaining the degree. The number of months used for traineeship mobility is added to those used for study mobility, up to the maximum allowed by the Programme.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding from the Ministry of Universities and Research and Sapienza’s own resources, every year the University offers students the opportunity to spend a study period abroad in one of more than 200 non-EU institutions with which bilateral agreements are in force. Students may sit exams or carry out thesis research during their stay.
The Overseas Programme provides a monthly grant of 700 euro net for the first five months and 500 euro net from the sixth month onwards. The stay abroad must last at least 90 consecutive days and may not exceed two consecutive semesters. The grant may be used only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza grants.

Study or research periods in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM Programme, funded by the European Commission, allows students and academic staff to spend a period abroad for study, thesis research, teaching or training in non-EU countries. The Programme provides a grant and covers travel expenses.
All activities carried out abroad are recognised upon return by the competent Sapienza academic staff, as defined in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility may last from a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months, with the possibility of extending the period up to twelve months, although the final six months may be without a grant (Zero-EU Grant mode).
The ICM grant also covers research mobility at doctoral level for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home university and the host university.

Activities of the Degree Programme Board
Within the Degree Programme Board, a designated academic staff member assists students in organising their study period abroad. This person is also responsible for verifying the compatibility of the study plan proposed by the student for the period abroad with their official study plan.
Students may also benefit from the contacts and collaboration that academic staff already maintain with colleagues at foreign universities, through various types of agreements. These contacts can support students in choosing their host institution and in defining their study or research programme, in line with the learning objectives of the Degree Programme and the individual interests and competences of the candidates.
Several Erasmus agreements are currently active.
