International experiences

International Opportunities

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad, both within Europe and beyond, for short stays or longer periods, including thesis work abroad and much more.

Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+

Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions. It supports student mobility for study purposes (SMS) across all disciplines and levels of study, including doctoral programmes, and facilitates the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.

The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and pass exams with full recognition in their academic curriculum, or to carry out research activities for the preparation of their Master’s or PhD thesis.

Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship

Erasmus+ traineeship mobility enables students to undertake internships at companies, training centres, and research institutions located in participating countries. The programme allows students to carry out full-time traineeship activities abroad, which are recognized as an integral part of their study programme.

Internships can also be undertaken after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before obtaining the degree. The duration of traineeship mobility is combined with Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum duration allowed by the programme.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme

Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own contributions, students have the opportunity each year to spend a study period abroad at one of over 200 non-EU partner institutions. Students can attend courses, take exams, or conduct research for their thesis.

The programme provides a monthly grant of €700 (net) for the first five months and €500 (net) from the sixth month onwards. The mobility period must be continuous, with a minimum duration of 90 days and a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The grant can be awarded only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza funding.

Study and research in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 (International Credit Mobility – ICM)

The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, allows students and academic staff to carry out study, research (including thesis work), teaching, or training activities in non-EU countries. The programme provides a scholarship and travel cost coverage.

All activities completed abroad are recognized upon return, as defined in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility typically lasts from 3 to 6 months, extendable up to a maximum of 12 months (with the last 6 months possibly without funding – Zero-EU Grant). The programme also supports doctoral research mobility for similar durations.

Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home and host institutions.
