Course objectives

Learning goals Acquire analytical frameworks on the theoretical level, useful for interpreting applied aspects and policies related to microfinance. Particular attention will be given to how a gender-based approach can explain the evolution of micro-credit, as a way of fighting against poverty (absolute and relative) of women (and men). Knowledge and understanding Knowledge of concepts, definitions and applied analytical schemes, with reference to the evolution of microfinance in Europe and worldwide. Ability to deal both theoretically and empirically with the concept of diversity applied to (micro)finance. Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the students are able to formalize real economic problems and to link the methods to the empirical results. Making judgements Students develop critical skills through the study of a range of experiences lived in various parts of the world, often from a gender perspective. Communication skills Students, through the study, acquire the technical-scientific language of the discipline. They must also learn how to structure and present a research report. Learning skills Students who pass the exam have learned a method to study various forms of sustainable finance and are able to apply it in a future work environment.

Course program
The laboratory aims to develop practical skills for analysing and interpreting data and real cases in the field of microfinance. Students will learn to read indicators, use datasets, evaluate the performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs), and interpret the economic and social impact of microcredit interventions.
Prerequisites
In order to withstand the topics discussed in this course, it is suggested that students have some background knowledge of Microeconomics.

Frequency
Attendance is strongly advised. In case this should not be possible, students are required to contact the instructor.
Exam mode
Students are required to present a project on microfinance topics.
