FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF BUSINESS
Course objectives
The course provides students the tools to understand and manage the main issues relating to corporate finance, investment decision and business finance. The course is aimed to explain and develop the main methods of evaluating an investment project and issues related to sources of financing and optimal financial structure.Risultati di apprendimento attesi (Inglese): At the end of the course the student will be able to: a) know the main financial sources, b) determine the optimal financial structure, c) calculate the cost of capital, d) select the best project among different alternatives, e) assess the value of a company using the most common valuation methods.

Course program
The course is intended to provide students with tools that enable to interpret the main issues related to corporate finance and to evaluate corporate financing and investment decisions.
In this perspective, the course is aimed to illustrate and develop the main methods of evaluation of an investment project, the issues related to identification of the sources of financing and of the optimal capital structure of a firm.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to develop and analyze the financial management process of a company and to answer some basic questions such as:
- Which investments produce value for a company?
- Which financial sources are available to a business owner? Which market make them available?
- What is the cost of operating capital?
- Which financial structure is optimal?
- How to evaluate a company?
The answer to these questions will be provided through the presentation of the main theories on corporate finance and analyzing the most common financial instruments used by companies.
Prerequisites
To undertake the Financial Analysis of the Company course, it is recommended that students have a solid foundational knowledge in the following areas:
Business Economics Knowledge: A good understanding of the fundamental principles of business economics is essential, particularly regarding concepts such as accounting, financial statements, resource management, and key market dynamics.
Financial Mathematics: It is recommended that students are familiar with basic financial mathematics concepts, such as the discounting of cash flows, interest calculations, and understanding the main formulas used in investment appraisal.
General and Analytical Accounting: A basic understanding of accounting principles is crucial for analyzing and interpreting financial statements, as well as for applying financial analysis techniques.
Basic Statistics: Although not strictly required, a basic knowledge of statistics can be useful for understanding concepts related to risk management and financial data analysis.
Basic Computer Skills: The ability to use numerical analysis and data management software (such as Excel) is essential for effectively applying financial analysis tools and managing investment projects.
