Objectives
The master’s degree programme in Management Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome aims to provide advanced knowledge and develop high-level skills that integrate the technological and design-oriented content typical of engineering disciplines with a thorough understanding of the economic and managerial aspects of decision-making issues within organisations. To this end, the programme explores in depth and critically examines the methods and models adopted as well as the analytical and intervention tools employed in the management of complex systems characterised by a high level of interaction between technological evolution, the structure of markets in which businesses operate, and the competitive strategies they adopt.
In particular, graduates in Management Engineering are able to play a key role in both strategic and operational decision-making within organisations, by virtue of their ability to effectively and efficiently apply methodologies drawn from economic analysis, management, operations research, and information technology to the identification and resolution of issues linked to the design, organisation, and management of production systems for goods and services.
The knowledge and competences acquired upon completion of the Master’s Degree Programme also provide a solid foundation for further academic study through second-level postgraduate Master’s courses or PhD programmes strictly related to the Master’s degree programme.
Academic programme description
The educational objectives of this master’s degree programme are achieved through a study plan characterised by an initial common core, consisting of a set of core courses, which is subsequently complemented by a range of elective courses organised into coherent alternative tracks aimed at deepening specific economic, technological, and methodological aspects.
The core courses, which are the foundation of the educational programme, primarily relate to the economic-managerial area. In this context, they provide the methodologies and tools needed to understand how businesses define their horizontal and vertical boundaries and how markets function. They also enable the integration of organisational and managerial aspects into technical projects, while supporting performance improvement and organisational restructuring from a design-oriented perspective. Secondly, the core courses also cover the area of industrial engineering management, with particular focus on the main issues related to production, materials, logistics and supply chain management, from both organisational-managerial and technical-operational perspectives. Finally, the core courses aim to broaden methodological knowledge in the areas of automatic control, operations research, and optimisation, which are essential for addressing and solving, in a structured manner, decision-making issues in complex systems.
Following the core courses, the programme offers the possibility of selecting one of several alternative tracks that flexibly combine the model-based and quantitative approach of management engineering and operations research with a variety of technological competences specific to different fields of engineering. In this way, students can tailor their academic profile through specialisation in areas such as organisation and management, smart operations management, economics and management of innovation and technology, and quantitative methods and models for decision support.
