Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

The final examination consists of the public defense of a Master's thesis carried out by the candidate under the supervision of a faculty member of the Degree Programme. The thesis represents the culmination of the student's academic education and serves to assess both the knowledge acquired during the programme and the student's ability to deepen that knowledge, apply it independently to a specific context, and present the results effectively and concisely. The Master's thesis must involve the development of an original and significant project, either addressing engineering challenges in innovative application domains or investigating fundamental and methodological aspects of the discipline, with particular emphasis on research-related topics. In both cases, students are encouraged to carry out their thesis within the framework of ongoing research projects and, where appropriate, to disseminate their results through publications in the scientific literature. The final examination assesses both the written dissertation and its oral presentation, with reference to the intended learning outcomes of the Degree Programme.

The Master’s thesis must be written in English. The thesis defense (in English) takes place in front of a dedicated examination board composed of faculty members.

The Final Degree Exam awards 30 ECTS credits. The final degree grade is normally calculated as the sum of the following elements:

• Weighted average of the credits for the grades obtained in the exams taken during the degree program (normalized to 110);
• Possible increase for academic performance, 0-2 points (1 point for those who have received at least 3 distinctions and 1 point if the degree is completed in 2 academic years, extendable to three years in the case of a study period abroad - e.g., under the Erasmus program - during which the student has earned at least 12 ECTS credits);
• Possible increase of up to a maximum of 8 points based on the evaluation of the final examination. For increases greater than 6 points, and in any case when honors (cum laude) are proposed, the supervisor must request the appointment of a co-examiner (second reviewer) by the President of the Degree Committee and the Chair of the Teaching Area Council, who will select the co-examiner among the faculty members of the degree program.

To be awarded cum laude, the total score must reach at least 113 points.

Operational Procedures

• The student must submit the graduation application online (https://www.uniroma1.it/it/pagina/domanda-di-laurea-online) by one of the deadlines specified in the Faculty of I3S graduation session academic calendar;
• The student must upload the thesis to the Infostud system by the deadline indicated in the graduation reminder issued by the Faculty of Information Engineering, Computer Science, and Statistics;
• The student must defend the thesis during the graduation session for which they have been summoned;
• The graduation committee determines the score to be awarded for the final examination, taking into account the quality of the thesis and the oral defense.

This Master's Degree programme also offers a Honours Programme. Meritorious students enrolled in the Honours Programme will attend additional courses and activities. These activities will not provide students any credit (ECTS). At the end of the first year, students can apply for the Honours Programme and each student will be assigned to a tutor.

Honours Programme activities:
-       Theoretical and methodological activities (100 hours)

• Attendance in PhD courses (courses that are not instructed within the Master's Degree)
• Attendance in an advanced summer school

-       Project activities (100 hours):

• Research and development activities in the industrial field and attendance to specialized courses and apprenticeship regarding R&S projects.

Alternatively to the previous choice:

• Collaboration in academic research projects and attendance to planning activities, competitions and research.

***Programme-Specific Activities***
Students are continuously involved in initiatives organized by the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering (DIAG), aimed at fostering interactions with companies and industry at different levels.

During the final year of the programme, company representatives and organizations are frequently invited to give short presentations during regular lectures. In addition, several courses include talks by entrepreneurs and researchers presenting successful case studies, and students are often assigned project work proposed by industrial partners.
