General goals Principles and methods to study the health conditions of a population Specific goals Knowledge and understanding After attending the course students are able to handle problems related to the evaluation of health conditions of single units and of a population Applying knowledge and understanding After attending the course students are able to handle the measure of health conditions of single units and of a population Making judgements Judgement skills are improved by discussion and use of alternative methods and practical and real examples Communication skills Students will develop capacity of communicating results through oral presentation of practical problems and by the final exam Learning skills Students who pass the exam have acquired skills and methods in Social epidemiology and in statistical methods for public health

Course program
Part I: Definitions • The individual and population health: definitions and concepts. • Determinants of population health: • micro determinants: o living conditions (income, education, work, living conditions, housing, etc.), or lifestyles (nutrition, physical activity, etc.), o subjective dimensions (attitudes, personality traits, etc.) • macro determinants: o physical environment (sources of noise, radioactive, electromagnetic pollution, etc.), services (presence and access to healthcare, school, transport, social and public security, etc.) o social context (social capital, social cohesion, family and social networks) o economic context (labour market, work policies, employment, income distribution, welfare level, etc.) o political context (social, work, housing policies, etc.) and legislative (laws that promote health) Part II: Measurements and Analysis • Construction of health data • Individual level (surveys) • Measurement of subjective health (scaling models) • The measurement of multidimensional health • Measurement of functionality • Health and quality of life • Analysis of a broad application on the health of the elderly Part III: Seminar insights Two in-depth seminars are planned. A) Environmental and health data for the promotion of environmental justice (Dr. Roberto Pasetto – Istituto Superiore di Sanità) Introduction and practical examples on approaches and methods relating to the collection and organization of environmental and health data, the production of indicators, their interpretation, and the formulation of recommendations for the protection of health and the promotion of environmental justice in communities residing in areas with strong environmental pressure. B) Social epidemiology (to be confirmed) - Elements of social epidemiology - Economic and social inequalities, social differences and longitudinal evolutions of health (micro and macro) - Indicators for epidemiological surveillance: definition and applications Part IV: Individual work
