International experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research and work placements abroad: in Europe and beyond, for short stays or longer periods, thesis projects abroad and much more.

Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation between higher education institutions; it funds student mobility (SMS) across all disciplines and levels of study (including doctoral studies) and facilitates the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area. The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and sit exams, with full recognition in their academic record, or to carry out research for the preparation of their undergraduate or doctoral thesis.

Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ training mobility enables students to undertake internships at companies, training centres and research institutions based in one of the participating countries. The programme enables students to undertake full-time placements abroad, recognised as an integral part of their study programme. The placement may also be undertaken after graduation, provided that selection takes place before the degree is awarded. The number of months of mobility is added to those of Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum allowed by the programme.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and its own contributions, Sapienza offers students the opportunity each year to spend a period of study – to sit exams or conduct thesis research – at one of the more than 200 non-EU institutions with which it has bilateral agreements in place. The Overseas mobility scheme provides a monthly grant of €700 net per month for the first 5 months and €500 net from the 6th month onwards. The continuous stay abroad must be for a minimum of 90 days and may last for a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The grant may only be claimed once per degree programme and cannot be combined with other Sapienza grants.

Study or research periods in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM) Programme
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, enables students and staff to undertake a period of study or research for a thesis, or teaching or training, in non-EU countries, and provides a grant and covers travel expenses. All activities undertaken abroad will be recognised upon return from the mobility period by the relevant Sapienza lecturers, as set out in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility may last for a minimum of 3 months up to 6 months (potentially extendable to a maximum of 12 months, the last 6 months of which without a grant – Zero-EU Grant scheme). The ICM grant also covers research mobility at PhD level for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home university’s city and the host university’s city.

***Activities of the Degree Programme***
The Degree Programme also helps to organise, in collaboration with the I3S Faculty and the Department of Statistical Sciences, targeted meetings aimed at sharing information with interested students about the various mobility opportunities available under the Erasmus programmes and, with the assistance of the Academic Advisor for International Mobility (RAM), the Chair of the Degree Programme provides guidance to interested students in choosing the most suitable academic institution for their chosen course of study, taking into account their personal aptitudes and interests. Support services have also been launched to assist students in selecting potential internship opportunities abroad.
