METHODOLOGY APPLIED TO THE EXCAVATIONS AND THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of METHODOLOGY OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH. Basic knowledge of methods and documentation, objectives and contents of Roman archaeology. Basic knowledge of finds, works of art, architectures and urban landscapes in Rome ritual habits, development of the building technique and the urban planning; artistic and material production; economic and commercial aspects.

Course program
Basic knowledge of tools, procedures, techniques and methods, aiming at archaeological research and skills of the archaeological fieldwork. Starting from analysis and stratigraphical documentation we will proceed to knowledge of classification system, the study of architectures, archaeological contexts and urban landscapes. Course aiming at the analyses of a number of case studies represented by relevant archaeological contexts (excavations, monuments, urban and/or rural area). - Part I: Introduction and history of studies. - Part II: Stratigraphic Archaeology. - Part III: Chronology and typology of finds. - Part IV: Landscape Archaeology.
Prerequisites
For the didactic activities foreseen by this course, no particular requirement is needed except those acquired during the study program in Archaeological Sciences of the three-year Bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Teaching mode
The course will be carried out through lectures with ppt presentation and discussion.
Frequency
Attendance at the two scheduled weekly classes is strongly recommended but non-attendance programs will be available.
Exam mode
Students evaluation will be based on specific knowledge (30%); active involvement in classes (20%); reasoning (30%); learning and communication skills (20%).
Lesson mode
Lessons will be held in the classroom with the help of ppt presentation. According to the situation will be organized specific visits and / or contributions of colleagues and professionals in the archaeological world.
