INTRODUCTION TO SUMERIC LANGUAGE

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of SUMERIAN LANGUAGE, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. The course aims to introduce students to the basic grammar of the Sumerian language, with notes on phonology and syntax.

Course program
The course is composed of a general part in which the main aspects (phonetic, morphology) of the Sumerian language will be analyzed and a monographic part in which these aspects will be deepen through the reading of cuneiform texts. The general part will treat the following arguments: 0. Introduction: 0.1 Sketch of the Sumerian language 0.2 Sources 0.3 Discovery and deciphering of cuneiform writing 0.4 The cuneiform writing system 1. Phonetic: 1.1 Vocals 1.2 Consonants 1.3 Vocals and consonants changes 2. Morphology: 2.1 Nominal chain - General aspects - Name - Adjetive - The dependence relation or "genitive" - Possessive - Plural - Cases 2.2 Verbal chain - Verbal root - Verbal groups and classes - 1 participant conjugation - 2 participants conjugation hamtu - 2 participants conjugation marû - conjugation prefixes - pronominal infixes - dimensional infixes - modal prefixes Syntax: - coordination - subordinate clauses - other syntactic aspects Other aspects of the Sumerian language: - dialects - language contact - morphographemic At the same time, cuneiform writing will be studied and Sumerian texts will be analysed (in transcription or in the original), researching and discussing the aspects of grammar studied.

All the material for the course (PPT/PDF of the lessons, exercises, notes, etc.) is available on eLearning (elearning2.uniroma1.it) in the page of the course "introduzione al sumerico".
Frequency
Class attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended. A Meet link will be available as well.
Exam mode
Students learning will be assessed during the course through discussion, quizzes, and small group works. Final exam will be based on quizzes from the main courses: two questions on Sumerian grammar and the reading of a passage from the Sumerian texts previously read during the classroom lessons.
