Course objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of the events that took place during the modern era, together with the basic tools to understand current historiographical paths and critically approach the contemporary documentation. The course also enables students to understand the development of modern history and its significance in relation to the present, as well as to realize different historiographical positions in the interpretation of historical phenomena.

Course program
Outlines of Modern History from the Age of Reform to the Century of Enlightenment.   The analysis of the main historical issues of this period focuses on the relation between the examined events and the long lasting structures from which they directly proceed. It will try, however, to recognise how the creative nature of the events can impress history with innovative perspectives.   The course will be divided in two parts: A) General and context ideas inserted in their progressive historical development (Colonial expansion in XVI° century and its impact in Europe; Protestant Reformation, Catholic Reformation and Counter-Reformation; wars of religion; modern state formation in Spain, France, England; Theory and doctrine of the state; Enlightenment and age of Revolutions) (30 h.) B) In-depth analysis: issues of Modern History examined in the perspective of the "History of mentality" (12 h.)

1) Outlines of History of the Modern Age from 1492 to 1815. Reference text: a manual used in high schools. 2) Storia delle Mentalità, a cura di F. Pitocco, Bulzoni (only pp. 189-624).

Exam mode
Attending the course and participating to the activities is an important occasion of learning, though not required. The examination will consider the level of knowledge and the thinking capabilities reached by each student at the end of the course, the comprehension of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline, the specific language, and the so-called transversal skills.
Lesson mode
During the lessons, sources will be presented and discussed. This method aims to improve the self-directed learning in order to propose a procedural approach
