Course program
The course aims to provide students with the tools for textual analysis and critical reading of literary texts, with particular reference to the forms, genres and themes of 19th-20th century Italian literature. To this end, the works of Luigi Pirandello will be examined. The course is divided into two parts: 1) the first part (42 hours) will be devoted to the examination of general concepts and the 19th-20th cultural-historical context (week 1); to the introduction of the main authors (week 2); to the analysis and commentary of Piradello's Fu Mattia Pascal and Umorismo (weeks 3-6); 2) the second part (42 hours) will be devoted to Pirandello's plays and short stories (weeks 7-9); to the novel Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore (weeks 10-12).

Attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended
Exam mode
The examination is oral and is marked in thirtieths. To pass the exam a mark of no less than 18/30 is required. The following criteria will be taken into account in the assessment: knowledge of the 19th-20th century Italian literature and of the historical-cultural context of reference; ability to analyse and interpret the literary texts studied (rhetorical-stylistic analysis, themes); ability to express a suitably argued critical judgement; ability to make connections with other works and authors studied; ability to use specialist vocabulary. In order to achieve a pass mark (18/30), the student must demonstrate a basic knowledge of the topics (historical and cultural context of reference and authors in the syllabus) and be able to analyse and interpret the main texts in a sufficiently adequate manner. To obtain a grade of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered, being able to explain the content with clarity, using the specialised vocabulary; to analyse and interpret the texts, linking them in a logical and coherent manner; to express an argued judgement.

Lesson mode
The course will be held in presence. Lectures (explanation of the historical and cultural framework, analysis, paraphrase and commentary of the works on the syllabus) will alternate with moments of synthesis and discussion in which students will be involved
