International experiences
Sapienza University offers a wide range of opportunities to study, conduct research and undertake internships in Europe and beyond. These opportunities can be for short or long-term stays and include the chance to write your thesis abroad.
Study periods in European countries: The Erasmus+ programme promotes transnational cooperation between higher education institutions by funding mobility for studies (SMS) in all disciplines and at all levels of study, including doctoral studies. It also promotes the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area. Students can attend recognised courses, take recognised exams and conduct research for their bachelor’s or doctoral thesis.

Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
The Erasmus+ programme enables students to undertake training placements at companies, training centres, and research institutes based in one of the participating countries. Students can undertake a full-time internship abroad that is recognised as an integral part of their studies. The internship can also be completed after graduation, provided that the selection process takes place before graduation. The number of months spent on the programme is added to the Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum allowed by the programme.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own contributions, Sapienza offers students the opportunity to undertake a period of study, take exams or conduct thesis research at one of over 200 non-EU institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements. Overseas mobility provides a monthly grant of €700 net for the first five months and €500 net from the sixth month onwards. The continuous stay abroad must be for at least 90 days and can last for up to two consecutive semesters. This grant can only be used once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza grants.

Periods of study or research in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International credit mobility (ICM) Programme
The Erasmus+ Programme, funded by the European Commission, enables students and faculty members to undertake study, thesis research, teaching or training activities in countries outside the EU. The programme provides a scholarship and covers travel expenses. All activities undertaken abroad will be recognised by the relevant Sapienza faculty upon your return, as set out in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility can last between three and six months. There is an option to extend it to a maximum of 12 months, but the final 6 months of this period are not covered by the scholarship (Zero-EU Grant option). The ICM scholarship also covers PhD-level research mobility for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the home and destination universities.
