Course objectives

1) Knowledge and ability to understand The cursus aims to introduce students to the knowledge of the evolution of a literary theme from its origins to the present age through the reading of the texts of different authors and different forms of writing. 2) Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student must be able to face the study of a literary theme, to relate texts with cultural and historical context, understand the evolution of the topic through the different phases of global history and the specificity of cultures. 3) Making judgements Analysis of texts is a fundamental tool for students to acquire the ability to read and interpret poetic and prose literary texts; different texts will be analyzed in the lessons to develop student's critical judgment. 4)Ability to communicate: Individual and group papers, written and oral, will be favored. 5) Lifelong learning skills Comprehension and interpretation of literary texts, practice of reading and ability to organize a critical reflection must become a permanent skill for adults, that must help them to develope critical skills.

Course program
The history of 19th century literature: main authors, literary genres. Reading and commentary on the most significant texts by the main authors: Manzoni, Leopardi, the literature of the Risorgimento. The development of women's literature between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through the study of the most significant authors and genres.
Prerequisites
Being able to identify the specific characteristics of a literary text from a metrical, stylistic, narratological and rhetorical point of view. Have a basic knowledge of the history of the period.

Frequency
Attendance is strongly recommended. Non-attending students will bring the same syllabus and should be familiar with all the texts in the two Anthologies.
Exam mode
Final examination on the programme carried out, which must assess knowledge of the main authors (Manzoni and Leopardi), texts and literary genres in the bibliography and the most relevant historiographical issues (romanticism-classicism, Risorgimento literature, women's literature). Please note that the two anthologies must be read in their entirety (even the Introductions to the anthology of women writers) and that the texts in them form the basis of the examination
