Course program
The course is divided into two 6-CFU modules taught by the same instructor: Institutions of the History of the Italian Language A and Institutions of the History of the Italian Language B. The two modules take place in the first and second semesters respectively and are conceived as parts of a single, unified program.
In the first part, after an introduction to the discipline (2 hours), the course will address the following topics:
a) Elements of Italian historical grammar (32 hours);
b) Overview of the linguistic history of Italian from its Origins to the sixteenth century (8 hours).
The topics covered in the second part are as follows:
a) Overview of the linguistic history of Italian from the seventeenth to the twentieth century (12 hours);
b) Monographic focus: Petrarch’s poetic language (26 hours).

Basic knowledge of the Latin.

Frequency
Attendance is highly recommended.
Exam mode
It is necessary to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30 to pass the exam. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired a basic knowledge of the contents of the course to achieve a sufficient grade; in order to obtain the maximum mark (30 cum laude), the student must demonstrate that he is confident in explaining the topics covered, using adequate terminology; he must also demonstrate that he is able to link different parts of the program in a coherent and logical way.
