LATIN EPIGRAPHY ELEMENTARY COURSE

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Latin Epigraphy, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. In particular, the course will provide students with the essential notions of Latin Epigraphy.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
Aim of the course is providing the students with the fundamental tools for the study of Latin inscriptions: Roman names and institutions, paleography and other material aspects of the texts, use of the main bibliographic resources and epigraphic database currently available. Lessons in the classroom will be enriched with a number of field trips to the main epigraphic collections in Rome.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of Latin and Roman history is required.

Frequency
Attending the lessons and the field trips is not mandatory, but warmly suggested. Students who are not able to attend the course are invited to contact the teacher for bibliographic suggestions.
Exam mode
The evaluation will be based on an oral exam dealing with the texts discussed during the lessons and the themes included in the related handbooks.
Bibliography
Other bibliographic materials will be shared with the students through the Classroom platform.
Lesson mode
Traditional lessons in the classroom, held by the teacher and by invited scholars, will be enriched by a number of field trips to the main epigraphic collections of Rome.
