NEO-GREEK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Modern-Greek Language and Literature with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. In particular, the course will provide students with the essential notions of Modern-Greek Language and Literature.

Course program
The course is aimed at students of Classic Studies (L-10) and it is supported by the Practice of Modern Greek 1 class (Part I).Part IThe course will examine basic concepts and theoretical aspects related to the Modern Greek language from a morphological, syntactic and semantic point of view. In addition, various types of exercises related to the topics covered will be performed in class, and additional homework will be given.Part II: 1 or 21. LiteratureBy the 11th century the economic and sociopolitical developments within the Byzantine empire lead gradually to a radical social change which, according to the scholars, will be the main cause of the fall of the Byzantine capital in 1453. During the same period there are changes in the cultural and the literary field which will gradually form a new model distinct from the medieval one. Finally, the Greek language is entering in its final phase acquiring characteristics which already since the 11th century allow us to talk about a modern Greek language.Through these developments a new period will begin for the Greek literature. A period which will lead in the modern era: from Digenis Akritas, the Medieval Tales and Bergadis’ Apokopos to the petrarchesque Cypriotic poems, the masterpiece of the Cretan literature, Erotokritos by Vitsentsos Cornaros and the Phanariotic compositions, Greek language never stopped maturing through poetry and prose writing, offering this way texts which draw even today the reader’s attention.2. History of greek languageIt will be dedicated to the History of the Greek language from the Indo-European period to the present day.

Frequency
Class attendance is highly recommended. Students who are unable to attend the second part, at the beginning of the course, must agree with the instructor on an additional program to equate the necessary hours in order to obtain the course’s credits.
Exam mode
To obtain the credits required for this course, the student must successfully meet the assessment criteria for: a. A written and oral assessment for the Modern Greek Practice I class, which takes place at the end of the first semester. The student must successfully meet the criteria set for the Level A1 in Modern Greek. b. An oral exam at the end of the course on the basis of the provided bibliography.
