Educational objectives In the first part of the course, the student will acquire the basic notions relating to the history of Latin writing in the ancient world and in the medieval West up to the early modern age, with particular attention to the evolution of handwriting in the ages of historical and linguistic transition. culturally and in different areas of use. He will therefore acquire the basic ability to read, identify and technically and historically contextualize the writings in the Latin alphabet used until the advent of printing.
In the second part, the student will acquire advanced level knowledge and ability to interpret the historical-cultural dynamics in the field of Latin Paleography, with attention to the most recent developments in the debate and disciplinary bibliography; he/she must also be able to collect and interpret the data on which to base a judgment that is critically aware, also in the ethical-social dimension underlying the discipline.
Overall, therefore, the student must be able to use the knowledge acquired in reading and analyzing documents, in addressing open questions, in implementing study and research methods, communicating the results of their work with the appropriate vocabulary also to specialists in the subject.
More specifically, the course aims to provide the essential elements of the historical-graphic development of writing in Latin characters, with appropriate references to the history of the manuscript book in its material and technical aspects, and with particular attention to the most widespread book scripts in the Italian peninsula.
The understanding of these elements is functional to the ability to read, date and contextualize all writings in the Latin alphabet, in any language used, as well as the ability to read and understand cataloging descriptions of manuscripts from the medieval and modern ages. They will also be able to critically analyze the manuscripts in their graphic and material aspects, actively participating in the seminar activities included in the course.
