Foundamentals of Rhetoric and Textual Analysis

Course objectives

The student will understand the development of the rhetorical theory, from antiquity to the present day; he must will be able to identify the rhetorical structures that inform a text or a discourse, in order to elaborate a critically aware judgment. The student will be able to use those knowledges and abilities as a support for researchs, and must be able to communicate the results of his work to both specialist and not expert audience.

Course program
The course will focus on poetic texts written between the 17th and 18th centuries and will be divided into a theoretical section, with the reading of selected passages from Joseph de Jouvancy's Institutiones Poeticae, and a textual analysis section, for which Benedetto Menzini's Christinae Suecorum reginae panegyricus, the Sei omelie di Clemente XI esposte versi da Alessandro Guidi (1712), and Antonio Malegonnelle's funerary oration for Christine of Sweden will be read. These are texts for which no modern editions are available; the ancient editions, on which the lessons will be held, are digitized on Googlebooks, and will be uploaded by the teacher to the Course's Classroom page. Lessons will begin on October 10th and will take place in the Aula Riunioni (1st floor of the Faculty), from 6 to 8 pm. Non-attending students will prepare the exam on the following texts: Gli studenti che non frequentino il corso prepareranno l'esame sui seguenti volumi: B. Prerequisites
A good knowledge of the Latin language.

Frequency
Lectures will focus on analyzing the text from a stylistic and historical-cultural perspective. PowerPoint presentations or other audiovisual aids will not be used. The texts will be read in early printed editions or in manuscripts. Students are required to take notes of the lectures, which will then be used to pass the exam.
Exam mode
The exam will be held in written form; in two hours the student will have to translate, analize and comment a few passages (selected by the teacher) from the texts read in the classes, for attending students, or from the texts listed in the programme, for non-attending students, and prove himself able to comment on the vocabulary, the syntax, the metric, the historical and literary issues of the texts.
