Other training activities that award credits
AAF 1150
The Degree Programme offers various ways to earn these AAF credits:
- attending conferences and/or seminars recommended by the Degree Programme, the Department, or the Faculty (in the latter two cases, it is advisable to verify that they are officially recognized by checking with the organizers or me), potentially including the submission of a report (depending on the specific requirements);
- attending language courses (minimum 100 hours) and obtaining a certificate of completion;
- participating in internships selected from those listed on the TSP-Sapienza platform.
These opportunities are primarily announced via the Degree Programme's Classroom page.
AAF 1186
These AAF credits are recorded by the University Language Centre (CLA); the Centre does not grant credit based on external certifications but requires students to pass an exam.
Information regarding the various exams (English, French, and Spanish) can be found on the dedicated webpage (https://cla.web.uniroma1.it/it/aaf-lingue) by selecting either "Corsi" (Courses) from the left-hand menu—for information on exam preparation activities—or "Esami" (Exams)—for information on exam dates and the recording of credits.
AAF 1136
The Faculty is currently developing a new method for passing this assessment.
Alternatively, an ICDL Full Standard certificate (7 modules) or an equivalent qualification may be recognized.
Graduate
The final assessment consists of the preparation, organization, and drafting—under the guidance of a faculty member—of a written paper that will be evaluated by a graduation committee. Through this assessment, the degree candidate must demonstrate that they have fully acquired the ability to apply, communicate, and leverage the knowledge, methods, and skills they have gained.
The defense takes place before a committee—which may be divided into sub-committees—and focuses on the themes and issues addressed in the thesis. The supervisor who guided the student during the drafting of the thesis presents the work to their colleagues and then poses a question to the candidate.
After hearing the response, other committee members may intervene and ask the candidate further questions.
At the conclusion of the defense, the committee assigns the thesis grade.
In accordance with the guidelines of the Faculty Teaching Committee, the degree program allows for the addition of up to 5 points to the grade derived from the weighted average of all exams taken during the study program (calculated by the Infostud system and rounded to the nearest whole number).
The points awarded by the committee take into account the supervisor's assessment of the candidate's research process and the quality of the final outcome, as well as the presentation of the research findings and the defense of the thesis during the discussion.
A score of 0 points may be assigned to a thesis whose defense was strongly advised against; a score of 5 points may be awarded for work considered formally excellent and of outstanding quality in terms of content.
Honors (*lode*) achieved during the course of study do not contribute to the overall grade calculation, nor are they a prerequisite for receiving the maximum grade.
If the maximum number of points is awarded and the final grade reaches 110/110, the committee may—upon the supervisor's proposal and by unanimous decision—award honors (*lode*) to particularly deserving candidates. Useful information for graduation applicants

Path of excellence
To enhance the education of high-achieving students interested in advanced study, the degree program has established an "Excellence Track."
The Excellence Track consists of educational activities that supplement the standard curriculum of the degree program in which the student is enrolled. Some of these activities are planned by the Degree Program Council or the Teaching Area Council and involve in-depth disciplinary and interdisciplinary study, seminars, and internships; others are arranged individually with students, based on their specific cultural and scientific interests.
Participation in the Excellence Track is open to students who apply following the call for applications issued each academic year by the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy.
Successful completion of the Excellence Track, certified by the relevant Degree Program Council or Teaching Area Council, entitles the student to a refund of the tuition fees paid during the final year of the program, excluding the flat-rate administrative fee and the regional tax.
