SPANISH LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION

Course objectives

A) Knowledge and understanding: demonstrate a good command of the Spanish language system, from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective; understand at least in general literary and informative texts, including those on sectoral topics, partially appreciating their style and linguistic registers. B) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the students will communicate effectively using a clear language, appropriate to the communication context; he/she will demonstrate command of the lexicon and syntactic structures of the Spanish language in social and / or professional relationships; he/she will write texts with a clear and effective argumentative structure. C) Autonomy of judgment: the student will be able to recognize and interrogate texts of different types and belonging to various genres, with different degree of complexity: he/she will be able to express one's point of view on a varied range of topics, adopting a style appropriate to the recipient; he/she will know how to use the theoretical tools learned during the course for the analysis of textual macrostructure and microstructure; he/she will develop a non-mnemonic study-method based on full awareness of theoretical principles and critical analysis of texts. D) Communication skills: the students will be able to express oneself in written and spoken form, demonstrating to understand the speech of the interlocutors; he/she will present clear descriptions of simple topics, and explain the topics that will be discussed during the course, using the appropriate scientific terminology. E) Learning skills: the student will develop a study method suitable for the transmission of acquired knowledge, and be able to use the tools provided during the course with the utmost rigor, approach the scientific literature of the discipline.

Course program
The course is divided into two parts: 1) Lectures by the teacher on topics of Spanish grammar. 2) Lectures by native language lecturers. The course aims to develop the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the in-depth study of the morphological and syntactic structures of the Spanish language, the reinforcement of lexical, phonological, and orthographic skills, and the development of pragmatic competencies. Part 1: Linguistic Component: - Phonetics, rules of accentuation and syllable division - Definite and indefinite articles - Formation of plural nouns and adjectives - Use of ser, estar, haber, and tener - Possessive, demonstrative, and numeral adjectives and pronouns - Comparison - All tenses of the indicative mood of regular and irregular verbs - Present subjunctive - Use of the most common prepositions - Personal and impersonal obligation forms - Gerund morphology - Periphrases with infinitive and gerund - Regular and irregular past participles - Affirmative and negative imperative of regular and irregular verbs Part 2: Communicative Component: - Understanding frequently used phrases and expressions related to immediate relevance - Communicating in simple and routine activities that require a straightforward exchange of information on familiar and common topics - Describing aspects of one's background and surroundings in simple terms, expressing immediate needs
