Literatures and Cultures in French Language

Course objectives

Know and understand the field of study of cultures and literatures expressed in the language of reference, in its diachronic development and in the comprehension of texts. Be able to reflect on the problems and concepts proper to the history of culture and literature in order to understand their intercultural dimension, considering the contextual elements of texts and situations. Acquire skills, skills and knowledge necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy and critical capacity.

Course program
This course aims to illustrate two important examples of French realist novels belonging to the first and the second half of the nineteenth century. It will provide the student with basic notions on nineteenth-century French literary culture in its relations with contemporary social structures. The student will also learn to easily understand, critically analyze and interpret complex texts in French with independent judgment.

Frequency
Attendance at class is not mandatory, but highly recommended
Exam mode
Oral exams during institutional appeals, lasting about half an hour for each candidates, with open questions related to literary history and to the analyzed novels. To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30. The student must have acquired a basic knowledge of the literary period studied, a sufficient ability to analyze the texts, and be able to expose the concepts acquired in an orderly and correct manner. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired a comprehensive knowledge of the topics covered during the course and an excellent ability to analyze the texts, being able to link information in a systematic and consistent way, to expose them with perfect use of the language, to integrate the concepts learned with reflections sharp, original and supported by appropriate documentation.

Lesson mode
Lectures, without the use of telematic supports. Listening to the lessons, with the constant involvement of the students, will teach them: a correct method of analysis and understanding of literary texts; a good practice of organizing and exposing the speech. The timing of the course will be: 24 hours, literary history; 30 hours, “Eugénie Grandet” by Balzac; 30 hours, “Madame Bovary” by Flaubert.
