Course objectives

Know and understand the field of study of cultures and literatures expressed in the language of reference, in its diachronic development and in the comprehension of texts. Be able to reflect on the problems and concepts proper to the history of culture and literature in order to understand their intercultural dimension, considering the contextual elements of texts and situations. Acquire skills, skills and knowledge necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy and critical capacity.

El curso introduce los estudiantes al conocimiento de la literatura hispanoamericana colonial, del siglo XIX y del siglo XX, a través de sus temas y autores principales (Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Garcilaso de la Vega ‘El Inca, Esteban Echeverría, Domingo F. Sarmiento, José Hernández, José Martí, Rubén Darío, Pablo Neruda, César Vallejo, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel García Márquez), poniendo en relieve la fuertes conexiones con la historia del continente, con las transformaciones lingüisticas y con la formación de una nueva conciencia americana. Frequency
The course is divided into modules, and each module is linked to recorded lectures, readings, and in-class activities. These activities are listed on the "Hispano-American Cultures and Literatures 2025-2026" e-learning platform. (https://elearning.uniroma1.it/course/view.php?id=19926) Students may attend in-class lectures or recorded lectures, read the texts listed in the syllabus, and will take a final written exam with open-ended questions on the topics covered in the various modules. Students in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation (12-credit course) will be exempted from taking the first part of the exam in January 2026. Those who participate in the in-class activities, with a minimum of 15 participants for the first part and 15 for the second part, may choose not to participate in the exemption and/or written exam, or may only answer some of the questions. For the second part of the program, which will take place in the second semester, a selection of novels and short stories will be offered. All participants must choose one novel and one short story (by the same author). Reading groups (maximum 4 participants) can be organized with students choosing the same group of books. Individual readers will be asked questions in the written exam; groups will be given an oral presentation in May 2026, according to a schedule published on the course's e-learning page. The written exam can be taken during any of the exam sessions available on Infostud. For non-attending students, the study program remains unchanged, but students must contact the instructor at least one month before the exam to schedule the exam.
Exam mode
Written Exam with open questions, related to the themes of the Course. For attending students there is a written exam about the first part at the middle of the course. In the event that the student does not consider the result achieved sufficient, he can integrate it with an oral exam on the date following the one in which he or she took the written test. In the case of not passing the test, students can repeat it in subsequent appeals. To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the global development of the Hispanic American literature, a basic knowledge of the main authors and of being able to situate authors and texts in their correct temporal development. To achieve a grade of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them in a logical and consistent way.
