Czech and Slovak Translation III

Course objectives

The course sets out to teach translation proficiency based on a number of skills, including both linguistic and cultural competence. Previously acquired knowledge of Czech and Slovak language text linguistics, semantics and pragmatics will be applied to the practice of text translation.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course focuses on translation skills and requires a good knowledge (B2-C1 Level) of Czech and Slovak. Stylistic analysis and translation of texts belonging to different literary genres, mostly modern and contemporary, is exercised. Moreover, special problems of literary translation are elucidated taking into account both Italian and foreign cultural contexts. Native Czech or Slovak students can work at the translation of Italian text into Czech or Slovak.
Prerequisites
B2-C1 level of knowledge of Czech or Slovak is requested.

Teaching mode
Lessons take place during the whole school year. Lessons about problems of theory and practice of literary translations are accompanied by a practical seminar: Italian students students translate text from Czech or Slovak, Czech or Slovak students translate texts from Italian. Their work is guided, in order to exercise and refine the acquired competences. Due to its practical character, the workshop should be attended.
Frequency
Twice a week, Summer term.
Exam mode
A written translation of a literary text (3 hours) is followed by an oral exam, during which the written translation is discussed. Translations and other work produced during workshops are requested 30 days before the oral exam.
Lesson mode
Due to the practical character of the course, students are encouraged to attend lessons.
