Objectives
The Degree Course in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation trains male and female students for the profession of mediator in all contexts of interlingual and intercultural communication (also in the presence of minority and immigrant languages), whether institutional or private, in the fields of international cooperation, associationism, reception and integration of immigrants, culture and education, foreign trade and tourism. Its main training objective is the acquisition of a solid written and oral command of two foreign languages, flanked by extensive historical-cultural, linguistic-theoretical and literary knowledge in the relevant fields, by skills in analysing, interpreting and translating texts, including specialised ones, and by the ability to use the main IT and digital communication tools in the specific professional field. The skills acquired in the foreign languages and cultures of study are supplemented, in view of their use in situations of encounter and exchange between cultures, even those that are distant from each other, by specific teaching of general linguistics and the history of the Italian language and literature. Knowledge of basic notions in the economic, legal, historical-geographical, sociological, psychological, educational and political sciences and statistics fields completes this training, calibrating it to the current and emerging needs of the world of work.
The attendance of courses and exercises, the learning of study texts and the subsequent passing of profit exams, as well as internships and apprenticeships in public bodies and private companies (in Italy and abroad), enable students to acquire strong skills in interacting in a multilingual context, autonomously managing related processes and easily resolving any critical issues.
In the first year, the training programme includes teaching in the fields of Italian studies, general linguistics, languages of study and cultures of reference. In the second year, students progress in the learning of the two chosen languages and the reference literatures and cultures. In the third year, targeted teaching of translation theory and practice completes the language training. The latter, in all years, includes, in addition to lectures given by lecturers, constant practice sessions coordinated by mother-tongue linguistic experts in laboratories specially equipped for multimedia learning, where students also learn to use the main IT and digital communication tools in use in the specific professional field.
In the second and third years, students enrich their education, with a view to a professional career or continuing their studies, by choosing from a wide range of related and supplementary subjects in the fields of economics, law, history-geography, sociology, psychology, didactic-pedagogy and political science and statistics.
In the three-year course there are also 18 free-choice credits among all those offered at Sapienza.
In order to help graduates find their place in the world of work, internships and apprenticeships are offered, in agreement with public bodies or private companies, in Italy or abroad.
The university course concludes with the writing of a paper related to one of the disciplines of the course of study or the internship experience.
In addition to Italian, graduates in Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation will be able to use effectively at a level not lower than CEFR B2, in written and oral form, at least one language of the European Union, with reference also to disciplinary lexicons, after completion of a total of 36 CFU in the three-year course. They will also acquire knowledge, at a level not lower than CEFR B1, in written and oral form, of a second foreign language (of the European Union or of a non-EU country), after completion of a total of 24 credits over the three-year period.
For English only, the minimum exit level of CEFR C1.1 must be reached after a total of 36 credits have been completed over the three-year period, and the minimum exit level of CEFR B2.2 must be reached after a total of 24 credits have been completed over the three-year period.
