Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Antichità e Istituzioni Romane (knowledge of some essential aspects of private life and public institutions in Roman times), with the help of textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in relation to the tourist enhancement of the archaeological heritage of Rome and the Lazio region. This knowledge can be applied to the study of promotion and pedagogy of cultural heritage, developing the ability to formulate judgments autonomously, coordinating and contextualising the topics professionally, making a correct use of the available bibliography, and being able to carry out research on the specific aspects of the disciplinary sector to tourist studies.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
Introduction to shows and places of entertainment in imperial Rome (10 hours). Shows (theatrical, circus and gladiatorial) (15 hours) and places of entertainment (theatres, circuses and amphitheatres) (10 hours) in the ancient sources. The lessons will be supplemented by visits to the epigraphic collection by Antiquarium Comunale del Celio (7 hours).

Frequency
Attendance not compulsory; students unable to attend 80% of the lessons will be able to take the exam with a program for non-attending students
Exam mode
Oral exam on the books adopted and on the topics covered in the lessons; verification of the acquisition of the training objectives. To pass the exam students must get a grade of not below than 18/30; students must demonstrate to have acquired a sufficient command of course topic. In order to achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all course topics, and to be able to connect them in a logical and consistent way.
Lesson mode
Lectures with reading and commentary on literary and epigraphic sources, and visits to the epigraphic collection by Antiquarium Comunale del Celio.
