MEDIEVAL HISTORY I
Course objectives
The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Course program
Teaching (channel L-Z) is aimed at students whose initial surname is between the letters L and Z; in case of a double surname, the initial of the first one will be take into account. Considering the perfectly overlapping context data (semester, days, lesson schedules and bibliography of examination) will not be accepted in any case questions of transition from one channel to another.
During the 84 hours of lectures will be retraced over a thousand years of medieval history, from the fourth century to the fifteenth century. The lessons will be divided into blocks of different duration based on the number of topics to be developed:
1. The centuries of late antiquity when the Roman world is changing as a result of migratory, warlike, settlement, socio-political phenomena;
2. The early medieval centuries when new experiences are being structured;
3. The central centuries of the Middle Ages in which there is a very significant growth in all areas;
4. The Later Middle Ages centuries as a period of transition to the modern age.
Prerequisites
Since this is a teaching aimed at students in the first year of the course it's sufficient the knowledge acquired in the educational path of secondary school.
For foreign students - attending and non-attending students - a fundamental prerequisite is the ability to read, understand and speak the Italian language fluently with language skills more than good.

Teaching mode
Lessons will be frontal with the addition of supplementary materials (sources, maps, images) that will be read, discussed and analyzed in the classroom. Students will be invited to propose topics for discussion, to ask questions, to make their critical contribution to the common dialogue. The lessons will take place exclusively in Italian, therefore foreign students will have to possess more than good skills in the Italian language, being therefore able to understand and express themselves fluently in Italian.
Frequency
Attendance is recommended, but not mandatory.
Exam mode
The test will take place in the form of an interview exclusively in Italian. Foreign students will take the test equally in Italian, they will have to have language skills more than good and express themselves in a fluent Italian.
Attending students will have to report not only on compulsory texts, but also on all materials read, discussed, analyzed, distributed in class or possibly uploaded on the institutional platform chosen. Non-attending students will only report on the given bibliography.
There are no exemptions, ongoing tests, neither written nor oral checks during the course and even after the end of the lectures. The dates of the exam will be included in the InfoStud system according to the educational calendar decided and disseminated by the Faculty and will be the institutional opportunities to demonstrate the acquired skills.
