ADVANCED MUSEOLOGY

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of ADVANCED MUSEOLOGY, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. Purpose of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of issues relating to the use of Cultural Heritage.

Course program
The course will address the topic of museum education as a strategic priority for museums in the 21st century. Starting with an analysis of the history of the educational function of museums, including in relation to the birth of the modern museum and the evolution of audiences, the lessons will analyse in detail the process of enjoyment, the value of the heritage experience in terms of learning, and the significance of educational activities in terms of cultural policy and values. Particular importance will be given to the use of storytelling (understood as a process of discovery and meaning-making) in the presentation and communication strategies of museum collections. To this end, concrete examples will be examined, with ample space given to the international dimension (in particular France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Northern Europe).
Prerequisites
A good background in the history of art and in modern and contemporary history.

Frequency
Attendance is recommended but not mandatory. Inscription to the Google Classroom is part of the involvement in the course activities.
Exam mode
Oral exam on the main readings of the course. The examination consists of an interview lasting approximately 20-30 minutes on the main topics covered during the course, with questions relating to theoretical aspects and practical experiences. Texts or images may be presented for comment. However, the fundamental basis of the required preparation concerns the texts in the bibliography.

Lesson mode
Frontal lectures and some laboratories, visits to museums and cultural institutions. It is important that all students enrol in Google Classroom in order to share materials and participate in any exchanges of ideas and discussions that the teacher or the students themselves wish to propose. The course style is highly participatory. Classroom dialogue is always encouraged. The teacher takes into account the students' suggestions and curiosities in order to adapt the programme to their interests and level of preparation.
