ARCHAEOZOOLOGY
Course objectives
This course will provide the students with an understanding of the main methodologies for an integrated approach to the study of the zooarchaeological remains from archaeological contexts, from Prehistory to post-Antiquity. The course aims at: allowing the student to develop a knowledge of Zooarchaeology and acquiring the necessary tools to link their knowledge of the material with an investigation of complex archaeological questions.

Course program
The relationship of Archeozoology with other archaeological disciplines. The study of animal remains assemblages: methods and application; the relationship with the climate, the environmental context, and social and economic systems; the use fo animals in domestic, funerary and ritual features. Identify animal bones from archaeological sites at the body part and taxonomic level, including some cases of complex identifications. Recognise human and natural modifications on animal bones and report them correctly. Undertake morphometric analysis and the consequent processing of the data so developed. Manipulate zooarchaeological data according to specific questions, therefore critically and selectively. Interpret zooarchaeological evidence. Discussion of different case-studies of animal assemblages.
